Welcome to the very FIRST calculator that offers cooked or raw options for dogs.
This calculator will give you a breakdown of ingredients for three different feeding models, and you can choose if you want to feed raw, or if you prefer to feed cooked with a bone substitute.

Be sure to weigh your dog frequently, as their weight can change quickly without it being obvious, especially for breeds with long hair. Having an accurate weight is the best way to determine how much to feed, especially if you are feeding for weight loss or weight gain. Please remember that this is just a general guide and starting point, so you should feed the dog in front of you based on their individual needs.

What is your dog's activity level? *LOW ACTIVITY OR WEIGHT LOSS - this applies to dogs who are elderly, mostly housebound, or have <1 hour of activity such as a short leisurely walk daily. This is the recommended starting choice for senior dogs.MODERATE ACTIVITY OR WEIGHT MAINTENANCE - this dog may average 1-2 hours of activity daily or go to daycare 1-2x per week.HIGH ACTIVITY OR WEIGHT GAIN - this choice is for dogs who go for several long walks daily, long hikes several times per week, or to daycare 4-5x per week. This is the recommended starting choice for intact dogs.WORKING DOG - this level of activity should be reserved for dogs who are working in herding, sled pulling, tracking/scent work.

"Activity level determines the percentage we multiply by to come up with the total amount to be fed per day, from 2% to 3.5%. Remember that activity levels often change with the seasons and may be breed dependent. A Husky may have increased activity in the winter, while a Chihuahua would likely have less!"

Type of food: gently cooked or raw? *RawCooked choices

Gently cooked truly means gently, or lightly cooked. The ideal cooked product would still be rare on the inside, around 120 degrees F. This is the best way to preserve as many nutrients as possible AND keep the food easily digestible, since food that is overcooked can become devoid of nutrients and denatured, which causes strain on the organs of the GI tract.. I recommend choosing lean cuts of meat when cooking for your dog. This is because cooked fats can become rancid and stress the GI tract. A lean cut may be a loin, or a grind that is no more than 10% fat. If you notice you're having trouble maintaining weight when feeding a lean cooked diet, you can either feed more, or you may need to add some calories back into the food after the cooking process by using an oil. * When using a bone substitute, you need to make up the weight of the lost ingredient by adding that weight back into the other ingredients.
