Who am I?
My name is Kara, and I’m a dog mom, cat mom, wife, and Nurse Practitioner who is passionate about animals and wants to see every furry family member thriving.
I’m a professional, yet I also love to laugh and goof off with my pets, who make sure I do so quite often! Connecting with both my human patients and animal clients brings me immense joy, and if you love animals the way I do, you came to the right place.
After watching my human patients struggle with medical problems for the past ten years, so many of them related to diet, I began to wonder what kind of impact our dogs’ diet might have on their health. Somehow, I never thought to apply what I had learned about the importance of nutrition for humans to my beloved canine and feline companions. However once I did, everything changed (for the better!).
I began to question the efficacy and transparency of kibble companies… and I was right to do so. It turns out that a diet of leftover non-human grade (and often unidentifiable) animal parts baked at high temperatures multiple times (which leaches out any nutrients and damages the proteins to the point where the body barely recognizes them) is not appropriate for our furry family members. Dogs and cats are carnivores, and thus consuming a diet that is, on average, 70% carbohydrates is not doing them any favors. This can lead to obesity, diabetes, dental disease and oral infections, chronic skin conditions, allergies, damage to the gut and by extension, the immune system.
Our dogs and cats should be eating food that evolution designed them to eat- a diet of meat, bones, organs, and some fiber. Once I realized this, I took a deep dive into the world of fresh feeding, applied what I had learned from a career in healthcare toward my pets, and became a certified professional canine nutritionist (CPCN). The first animals I transitioned to fresh food were my own!
